I’ve proven my innocence of science about “coffee” despite my being a coffee sucker. My unforeseen fascination in finding what “Luwak” means brought me to a little lazy research.
I was a bit surprised to know that Kopi Luwak is the most expensive coffee in the world. The name Cafe Luwak, I think, came from the shop’s primary stuff – coffee. In specific, it’s Kopi Luwak or Civet Coffee. In the Philippines, it’s called Kape Alamid.
FYI – What is civet coffee? It is known as caphe cut chon or fox-dung coffee in Vietnam. Civet is a small, lithe-bodied, mostly nocturnal mammal of the cat family. Civet coffee, refers to the beans of coffee berries once they have been eaten, partially digested and excreted by the Asian palm civet. In short, it is an animal poop.
The civets digest the flesh of the coffee cherries but pass the beans inside, leaving their stomach enzymes to go to work on the beans, which adds to the coffee’s prized aroma and flavor. There are very few of this kind of naturally processed product in Asia which makes this coffee rare and costly.
The shop – Hop into the newly opened shop located at the ground floor of J Center Mall in AS Fortuna, Mandaue City, next to Bo’s Coffee. There were numerous tables inside where friends can hangout. Smokers are welcome.
